History

Delivered to the legend, the foundation of Siena is attributed to Senio, the son of Remo, one of the mythical founders of Rome, and now revealed as the reason why the emblem of the Tuscan city that is a wolf suckling twins. What is certain is its Roman origins, Siena grew during the period of the barbarian invasions, thanks to its easily defensible position. In the Middle Ages, including the government of bishops, the town developed, fully formed in 1179. Meanwhile Siena began to expand, reaching a win Grosseto and the Maremma. The conflict ended with Florence in the famous battle of Monteaperti (1260) won from Siena. The rise of the Angevin dynasty on the throne of Naples ended the dominance Ghibelline in Tuscany: Siena was so overwhelmed by the return of the Guelphs and the republic fell.
