Charterhouse of Calci
Whoever crosses the entrance to this Charterhouse is greeted by the following words: "Habitantibus hic oppidum carcer est et solitudo Paradisum", that is, for those who live here, the city is the prison and solitude is Paradise. So welcome to this corner of paradise! Lying at the foot of Monte Pisano, the Charterhouse extends into a valley which, due to the pleasant landscape, has been renamed Val Graziosa . The fourteenth-century origins of the complex are hidden behind the transformations that took place between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, in line with the new precepts of Baroque aesthetics and magnificence.
Its treasures are now open to the public. In a labyrinthine escape of chapels, rooms and cells, get ready to be amazed by the optical deceptions with which skilled artists have enlivened the walls: fake marble frames, false architecture, illusory perspectives. This scenario was chosen by Benigni as the film set for The Little Devil .
The beauty of the cloisters and an interesting display of natural finds and curiosities must also be added to the refinement of this illusionistic figure. The Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa , one of the most important university science museums for splendid mineralogical, geological, paleontological, zoological collections. How to get
On the train
The recommended station is Pisa Centrale. After that it is necessary to take another means to reach the museum.
By plane
The closest airport is Galileo Galilei in Pisa. From here by train it is possible to arrive at Pisa Centrale station from where a bus can take you to Calci.
By bus
From Pisa it is possible to reach Calci in about 30 minutes by public transport.
